YuYu Hakusho (幽☆遊☆白書 Yū Yū Hakusho) is an original manga series created by famed author Yoshihiro Togashi, creator of other series such as Hunter x Hunter and Level E. The series tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who is struck and killed by a car while attempting to save a child's life. After a number of tests presented to him by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the afterlife Underworld, Yusuke is revived and appointed the title of "Underworld Detective", Spirit Detective in the US release, with which he must investigate various cases involving demons and apparitions in the human world. The manga becomes more focused on martial arts battles and tournaments as it progresses. Togashi began creating YuYu Hakusho around November 1990, basing the series on his interests in the occult and horror films and an influence of Buddhist mythology.

The series has been adapted into many games throughout various consoles since its creation, though most of them were never released outside of Japan due to the series run start in different years in other countries. Out of those games only three were ever released on a PlaySation console, all three being released on the PS2. Out of those three only one was ever released outside of Japan. The games have all received mixed success and have ranged from Tactical Role-Playing Games to Fighting games (which is the primary genre).
